Next question. I've found lots of articles on removing the retainingYou will have to line up the tab with the slot when you install the
ring but how do you re-install it once you have the keg clean?
spear.
Make sure the spear is seated and twisted with the tab under the lip.
If you have a bad seal later the spear can not come flying out.
If you have a terrible seal and the tab moves the spear may get launched.
I always assume the worst case and keep my head away.
Start with one end of the spiral and tuck it under the groove.
Get a pair of channel locks and squeeze the edge of the spiral a little
at a time as you go around.
Keep in mind that you also have to squeeze the "O" ring. I sometimes have
to whack the spiral with a flat blade to push it down.
The more you do it the easier it gets.
Cheers,
Tom
O.K. So I am reading all of this, and thinking about the Pony Keg I have
sitting in my garage and realizing that five growlers and a Pony Keg equal
a 10 gallon batch.
How do you guys get these things clean?
Ryan
When empty I bleed all pressure, remove the spear, fill half way with water
and slosh around.
Turn over and empty.
Stick the power washer nozzle in the hole and blast away.
Empty an fill with water and Starsan.
Leave over night.
Empty and fill with water and idophor.
Empty, let drain and seal.
Takes about 20 minutes of my time.
If I skip the power washer step it takes about 10 minutes.
