I was thinking along the same lines. Heck, you know, when you buy a
newspaper, you usually don't even pay the price of the printing. The
advertisers pay the costs. The tax payer pays for that works in the museum
and the maintenance of the building, and the wages of the people working
there. So what the consumer pays is often hidden.
No doubt he justifies the cost of his computer and travel expenses, and
editor and even the printing operation because of the importance of his job,
and because the price of it is paid "somewhere", and maybe especially not by
the consumer (and thus, worse, by media manipulators).
On the other hand, I'm sure he wants to be paid more than the price of a
pencil and piece of paper for his work. I'll bet he even wants to be paid
by the hour for more than just the time he spends at his typewriter --
getting the story, discussing it with his boss, going to the event. And you
know, I'll be he even gets up on his high horse and says that his wages are
justified by his college education.
And somehow he can't understand, that while he sells his time and education
to peddle copies of mediocre words, a painter who is equally highly
educated, also talented, has had to invest his or her own money in supplies
and equipment, and is selling something original should also be adequately
compensated. And usually that adequate compensation is at a much lower rate
than what he expects as his natural due.
