1. eBay: Arrogant and/or unreachable staff, and they take all your money
on small sales.

Kind of like some dealers I've met.  Has the goods, won't take time to
sell them to the little guy.

eBay is like no-man's land.  You can send up a volley and hope it gets
returned or whatever by another human, somewhere.  Complain about the
volleyball court and you'll be ignored.

Far too expensive to sell little items, unless you're looking to pay
someone to take them off your hands.

2. StampWants: Arrogant staff, and a founder who believes the United
States deserves dozens of specialized categories and most other countries
(e.g., Vietnam) zero (check outhttp://www.stampwants.com/phpBB2/
viewtopic.php?t=61792 -- I'm the one in the penguin suit -- and note,
through the whole thing, the poll that shows that two thirds of people
voting in the poll agree with me and not the founder, "Mark".)

2 big things here - I DISLIKE WITH DISGUST that BLACK BACKGROUND. What
the hell are they into?  Goth?

Movement around the place seems to suck - big time.  Sorry, but it
does.

Other than that, I've skipped over this puppy because maneuvering
around wastes too much time.

3. Delcampe: Most promising, but bulk uploader only available under
Windows.  I contacted them and asked very nicely for API details, which
they said they would give to me if I wrote an open-source Linux
application and let them distribute it to everyone who wanted one!  It's
unrealistic to sell in a venue without a bulk uploader, IMO.

OK - get real here.  Get a 'DOZE PC for this.  I KNOW you're a
computer geek, so you could cobble something together dedicated to
selling.  'Nuff Said.  You're also fluent in Perl, are you not?  :^)

About them - they answer you - eventually.  Takes some time, they're
not a HUGE venture.  Bug fixes have been made according to my
satisfaction.

I can maneuver around quite fine with their setup and is quite easy to
do many things.  I use their site for my Belgian RR and specialty
items.  Always a good variety, plenty of DECENT sellers (a few
uptight) and when I pay by PayPal there's no conversion charge from
USD to Euro.  I may have to pay the seller a few centimes, but that's
not a bad deal considering I may not find that stuff here in the
states.

The only disadvantage - and it will cost about $50 to get - is
privileges (Gold Member) to do uploads.  I have opted for it, but have
not tried it out yet.  Looked over their lister, but haven't gotten
into the fine points.

Who said "If you want something done right...."?  I don't know what to
do.  Open an approvals company and advertise in Linn's?  Sell only via
sales circuits and APS StampStore?  Start selling at stamp shows?  Start
my own online stamp marketplace?  Buy a Windows license simply so that I
can use Delcampe's M$ bulk uploader?

Nyah, nyah...  Even '98 will do, I think...

I'm spitting nails, I'm so frustrated right now.  I just had a user at
StampWants tell me to hit the highway because I asked for little things
like "evidence" and "proof" -- proof that non-Americans don't see
StampWants as a U.S.-centric marketplace.

Skip over it, unless you're getting good deals.

I guess, barring other advice, I'd buy a Windows PC just to run the *one*
program that lets me list efficiently on Delcampe (I could use Quicken,
too, I suppose, one of the few programs without an equal-or-superior
parallel in Linux).

Oooooooh!  No Quicken in Linux?  Bah!  If you got your mind out of the
M$ gutter, my friend, you may find a few things that may help you that
the Linux crews haven't devised yet.  I thought Apple had the
advantage with Adobe & PhotoShop - now we're on even flooring.  Most
of the rest of the stuff on those "apples" doesn't appeal to me too
much.

I had thought Delcampe to be a much nicer, less
arrogant place than eBay and StampWants -- until that last letter they
sent me (I followed up with questions of the "You don't really
mean...???" type.  I'll keep you posted.)  Or I'll start filling out
sales books like a madman.  Or something....

Eh?  Did you spew at them?  I have received only positive e-mail
replies.

I know we've discussed this before.

Yup.

Any minds changed since then?

Nope.

Any new experience or advice?  I want to go punch a pillow.  Wasn't the
Internet supposed to make things *easier*?

If you have a one vehicle mind, the journey you make on the Internet
Superhighway may not be as enjoyable as it could be.  Get a Studebaker
as a backup PC with M$ poop on it.

That will save the pillow's life.

The above editorial was only my .02 USD.

Very good comments from an OLD sage. He really means well and is
truely honest and forthright. I read his every comment hoping that I
can one day tell him he is full of crap, if I live that long.

Why thank you very much Mr. Windows Clerk #1. I need all the support
I can get.
