Not that it'd be all bad.  People in Denmark, Finland, and the Netherlands
rated in the top three positions in a recent study of national happiness,
and you hardly get any more socialist than Sweden.  But they practice a
more pure form of socialism, while at the same time maintining the
principles and spirit of the Enlightenment, certainly nothing like the
perverted and disfigured thing that the Soviets called "socialism."

The economy of the Netherlands is very much capitalist based so that helps.
I find it fascinating that hey have somehow implemented a national health
care system despite the rhetoric of some in this country that a national
health care plan will bring forth evil.  OK, they do have higher taxes <g>
but then I get a general sense from the Dutch people I have met that taking
care of all of society, especially those raising children, is a point of
pride.

I think, sadly, that the rabid, fervent type of sentiment against national
health care in this country is rooted in the nightmares of the so-called
establishment imagining a runaway population of non-white babies whose care
is being paid for in part by their hard work and nifty gains in the stock
market.

It is probably good advice for someone who thinks socialism is good to
spend time in the Netherlands. They do indeed mix socialism with
capitalism and they seem to be better at it than some others. There
is still a bit of the work ethic there.

The do have a different approach to medicine, there. They have a
different approach to training doctors (it is more like a trade school
and there is the possibility to become a doctor without the benefit of
the undergraduate education the US requires. There is a general view
that doctor's wages need to be limited (although they are not poor).
They believe that your doctor is determined by where you live. Your
initial choice will be difficult to change in case you find you have
made a mistake. If you believe that you need specialist treatment,
unless your local doctor prescribes it, expect to pay for it out of
your pocket or outside of the national insurance scheme.

The Netherlands has been somewhat ambiguous about US-style elitism and
at some times and some university espoused an anti-discrimination
policy wherein they select students for the MD program at random from
applications, not based on academic performance. It is quite clear
that there is some variation in the end results (they do have some
excellent doctors and some not so good).

They do not have a system of judging fault like in the USA. If it
happens that you die from treatment or lack thereof, there is only a
remote chance that this event will be examined. Along that line,
euthenasia is a medical option available to the doctor (even despite
patient wishes).

Inasmuch as socialism is primarily about sharing what resources exist,
rather than stimulating the creation of better or new resources it is
well to ponder this as you age. You may also wish to note that on the
average the US experience is that you will need about 90% of your
lifetime requirement for treatment in the last year of your life.
