Spare Change Secrets
What's in your pockets? Find any odd looking coins lately? Well now,
is a good time to set them aside. You may be rewarded for your efforts
with a rare coin find. Don't stop there, check bank coin rolls for
early mintmarks, steel cents and error coins. Searching your pocket
change can be fun and even profitable.
The secret is to develop your hunting skills by visiting coin shops
and shows. You never know what you might discover. How many coins pass
through your hands each week? How many valuable coins have passed from
your hands back into circulation? The fact is you're can never be
sure, because you never stopped to look. You see finding them just
takes a little time and just a little knowledge.
Coins that are in the most demand that sell between $50 and $100 are
the more valuable ones because they usually increase in value first.
And age does not always equate value. Supply and demand are your best
measuring factors. Coins with less valuable that fall into the $2 to
$10 range are still a joy to find in pocket change. So unless a coin
came straight out of an uncirclated roll into your hand, that coin
will still show various degrees of ware -- the less ware a coin shows,
the more it is worth.
So from now on, remember to check all of your pocket change, even
coins you might buy at an auction. Set the odd coins aside. Later on
when you have some spare-time, check the coin's mintmarks, dates,
design, and circulated condition.
Here' s a small list of very collectible coins coveted by collectors,
but seldom seen in pocket change: Steel Wartime pennies, Buffalo
nickels, 90% Silver dimes, quarters, and Half-dollars, early date
Lincoln coins, copper pennies, disappearing silver coins, and many
more. Add them to your collection, complete a set or give them away as
gifts.
I just went through my change and found a couple of really bizarre-looking
coins. One that I got in change at McDonald's has an Indian on one side and
the date 1916, but the date looks really funny, like I had double vision.
The other side has some kind of cow with a big horn that comes to a sharp
point on the side of its head. I think my Grampa used to talk about these,
but I've never seen one.
The other coin is the size of a quarter (at least it was given to me as a
quarter) and it has a scantily-clad lady walking through a gate. The date
on that one is also 1916. The other side has a bunch of stars around a
hawk.
Please let me know if these are worth anything (more than just 30 cents).
