RF does not, in my opinion, dispense bullshit. He's ornery, mean,
irascible, insulting, and opinionated. But there's no bullshit factor
to his posts. The worst you can say about him is that his posts lack
substance or interest.

So the frequent nym-shifting you don't see as

whatever. Nevermind. Enjoy.

That really doesn't bother me. I often read a day's worth of posts
without really noticing who the posters were. I key on what's said
and not who said it.

When you think about it, "Dwayne L. Frampton" (if there was such a
poster) could be as easily made up as "RF". You are who you sign up
to be.

My main interest in newsgroups is the alt.english.usage newsgroup; a
group that focuses on English usage topics. There are some real names
and some made up names in that newsgroup. The choice seems to be
based on a desire for personal privacy.

As I've said, I'm not at all sure that using one's real name is a
particularly wise thing to do. Too many kooks out there on the net.

I once subscribed to that newsgroup for a while, after seeing your mention
of it here. Criminy, did I get flamed the first time I posted! If I ever
post there again, I will don my asbestos suit before hitting "send." It's
worse than the saxophone group, and that's saying something!

I rarely see "flaming" in aue. While I didn't see your post, it's my
assumption that you either misused a word, defended a faulty
construction, or otherwise made a mistake in usage. Any criticism
would have been of content and not of person.

It had to do with my identification of a verb form as being the subjunctive,
in response to a "what is this" query. The criticism was quite personal.
It happened long enough ago that I don't remember the name of the perp. I
got over it, but still give that group wide berth.

The newsgroup a.u.e. is no different from any other newsgroup in that
the door is open to all. The "regulars" will pounce on an error but
rarely on the poster of the error. If it's one of those common topics
(think abolishing the cent) that keep appearing in the newsgroup, the
replies are sometimes less than tactful.

There's currently a poster from China who is of the flaming sort who
didn't take it well when he was told his sentences were not idiomatic
English.

Most of the "regulars" are from the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia,
and South Africa, so there's a mix of "English" involved.
