I'm in total agreement with this.
Facts and statistics are culled, sorted,
and combined to support each argument and no one's mind is ever changed.
There's no point in using facts and statistics in a discussion about
gun control. What one person considers to be a "fact", the other
person considers a misapprehension. Each side can trot out statistics
to prove their point, but the other side will always ignore them and
the pull out some different set of statistics that proves their point.
The gun issue is a concept issue, and you are either married to the
concept that more controls are necessary or married to the concept
that fewer controls are necessary.
I have yet to see an argument on this issue where one party says "Oh,
I see your point. I've been wrong and now I agree with you". Ain't
gonna happen.
Of course, the same can be said about arguments about whether or not
"In God We Trust" should be on money, whether or not the penny should
be discontinued, or whether or not we need a dollar coin.
