Cleaning Up the ANA Mess

I indicated in an earlier post that I had been informed by ANA
headquarters that I would not receive a Board of Governors election
ballot. I questioned this with ANA staff. Fair is fair, and now I can
report that I have received a ballot, which I promptly cast and
returned to the auditors.
There is a dire need for regime change at the ANA. If it occurs and
causes some members to be upset, then so be it. Change is overdue. The
future, credibility, and vitality of the ANA depends on it.
I faced difficult decisions in deciding who I would support. A couple
able reformers, and the existing Board members, got the cold shoulder
because I felt that others would be more aggressive in pursuing the
needed changes. In the end my selections became much clearer when I
focused on the fact that ANA elections are NOT personality contests,
it is about who will do the best job. The unopposed candidates for
president and vice president have done little to communicate their
platforms and I felt neither was worthy of my support, although both
will be seated on the next Board.
I urge every ANA member to vote. Whether you agree or disagree on the
need for more open communication, increased accountability to the
membership, and rejection of the proposed bylaw changes, the objective
of this election should be to bring about a stronger ANA, and one
whose Board of Governors is committed to the membership - first,
foremost, and last.
