At the Baltimore show yesterday, I'm talking to an ancients dealer
about Lydian Lions, likely the world's first coin. He and I have
discussed this and other topics over the past five years or so. He's a
knowledgeable guy, author of two books. Only he's a boutique-type
dealer, with a very small inventory and relatively high prices, and
I've never found anything to buy from him. I told him maybe a year and
a half ago that I'd buy something from him sooner or later. He told me
it's no problem to talk. I've always made sure that when talking I
defer to anybody else who comes to his table.

So we're talking, and another guy comes to his table. I move aside
then when it's apparent he'll probably be a while, and I move on to
other dealers, as I've done before. I come back maybe an hour later,
and we pick up our conversation. When it's winding down, I ask to see
couple of his coins. He then says, out of the blue, that he knows as
well as I do that I'm not going to buy any coins from him and don't
waste his time or mine. I'm stunned. I stare at him. I then tell him
that was a really rude thing to say. He snaps back nonsensically about
how I've earned my keep being an *** over the past two or three
years and there's no reason to stop now. I'm further stunned. No
warning. This was after a perfectly cordial conversation.

Maybe he found out you talk about him behind his back.
