I agree with you. I actually *LIKE* having mottoes like those two on the
edges of coins, it makes them look much more 'dignified' and interesting.
The dates, OTOH, belong on coin faces and are my normal personal signpost
for defining a coin's obverse vs reverse (for my personal purposes, the
side with the date is the 'obverse').
