Thanks! omeone told me 60 mm to 105mm would probably work. s that the
case? see some nice Sigma's that I have my eye on but will have to sell
some coins to buy it.
Sigma makes 3 macro lenses with focal length ranges that would be
useful for coin photography....50mm, 70mm and 105mm. All 3 are in
their EX series of lenses (top of the line) with excellent sharpness
and build quality. All 3 will give life-sized (1:1) magnification.
The longer lenses, of course will give you more working distance. I've
looked up some pertinent facts on each lens and have included them
below. Since the closest focusing distance given for a lens is the
distance to the flim plane, I've subtracted the lens length plus about
an inch to get the approximate clear distance from the front of the
lens at the closest focusing distance..
I've also included the street price from a couple of decent mail order
dealers for a Canon mount with a USA warranty (do not buy gray market
photo equipment). eBay may be worth a look for a mint condition or new
version.
Another note....as sharp as these lenses are edge to edge on a film
camera, they will be even sharper on a cropped format digital camera
as the edges, where sharpness drops off, will be eliminated.
All 3 will also make excellent portrait lenses or moderate telephoto
lenses.
50mm f/2.8 EX DG
minimum focusing distance - 7.4 inches

70mm f/2.8 EX DG (newest, most expensive, reportedly sharpest)

length of lens - 3.74 inches
approx. clear distance - 5.36 inches
price at B&H Photo/Video - $429
price at Abe's of Maine - $399

105mm f/2.8 EX DG

A little late, but here is a shot of mine taken with the Sigma 105mm EX lens.
