Cleaning and Preserving Zinc Coins

I have a number of German notgeld coins made of zinc that have a crusty
greyish/white deposit on them. Can anyone point me to a reference on how to
initially clean off the coins and then treat them to slow or retard the
return of the crust? Thanks!
