Sure, Greece and Italy, and to some extent Austria, were in a different
situation than most others, since they had very "small" notes before the
euro cash came. But that changeover was more than five years ago ...

I think (but can't be sure, I can't remember with certainty...) Spain and
Portugal were as well...

The smallest note in Portugal around 1990 was 500 escudo's, or about
2.50 euro. The smallest note in Spain at that time was 1000 peseta's,
or about 6 euro. The largest coins were 200 escudo's and 500 peseta's.
