<acaudle@xxxxxxxx> offered the following on the subject:
...I once heard
that there are no such things as unsearched coins if the coins are
older than 50 years and have any potential numismatic value. Even rolls
that appear to be sealed may have been opened.
You're probably right about that, Anita. I'd surely be skeptical about the
terms "unopened", "untouched" and "unsearched" when it comes to things
within the realm of numismatics. One exception that I enjoyed seeing was a
couple of years ago when we were still in Oregon. I dropped by my favorite
coin shop one day and the dealer said that he had just purchased something
that was really interesting. He went in the back and brought out a small
cardboard box that contained three paper-wrapped rolls of Booker T.
Washington half dollars. He said he thought that the wrappers were original
and they didn't appear to have ever been opened. The end coins sported some
of the most stunning toning that I've ever seen. I tried to get him to sell
me one of the end coins, but he elected to keep them as they were, for he
had a roll collector coming in to check them out...
