Mind you, back in 1962 they circulated readily, especially in the US.
It has always struck me as odd as to why the US stopped using them
on a regular basis.

They fixed pockets in pants so they don't get holes as easy. So guys no
longer needed to have a coin pouch to save their pants pockets. So for one
thing you were branded as 'old fashioned' or a nerd if you continued to
carry those plastic ovoid thingies around. They'd just give their change to
their housewife to put in her very large purse. The ladies got 'liberated'
and they started wearing the pants so they mostly ditched the large
purse--they too no longer want to carry around large coins in their pockets.
Nothing wrong with that but it's just one reason for the obsolescence of
large halves. Sticking a current politician on them was also a killer as
well as the removal of silver content. Not everyone was completely enamored
of Kennedy you know. Plus if someone did like him who wanted to be reminded?
It was the same reaction we see today with regards to the Flight 93 movie.
