I was just got some early date large cents. Some (I can't rememberHi Daniel,
which ones) look to have faint letters/partial dates _above_ and to the
right where the current date is.
Is this possible?
I remember one letter looks to be an "r", another numeral looks to be a
"81", but printed _backwards_ and perhaps upside down (sorry, can't
show that with a keyboard).
I know some early-date coins have overprints. I even have one or two of
the common ones.
Sorry, can't provide you with a photo...yet. I just got my microscope
today, and may have it set up in a week or so.<G>

Yes, this is possible. You describe the what sounds like a the remanents of
a brockage error restruck. If noticed before leaving the mint, errors
like off-centers and brockages were sometimes restruck, as the mint could
not afford to waste planchet stock in the early days. While not common, this
is not unheard of. Looking forward to seeing the images.
