The characteristic of the genuine 14 D is the shape of the inside of the
mint mark. The genuine coin has a triangular shape on the inside of the D.
Die struck counterfeits abound, and are VERY hard to detect. In the past
year, we've had 3 die struck counterfeits come through the shop and 3-4
altered date coins come through. The altered date ones are generally
altered 1944 D. Check the spacing between the 9 and second 4, and a genuine
one has no VDB on the shoulder.
This is certainly one of the top counterfeited coins out there.
