I wouldn't be so sure. For most of this year there was a little logo
up in the right-hand corner of the www.ebay.com homepage saying
"powered by IBM", whereas on www.ebay.de (Germany) and www.ebay.ch
(Switzerland) it said "powered by Sun".
There are enough differences in the item groupings that I do NOT
believe everything is the same database. It cannot be on the same
server if one is a mainframe IBM and the other a Sun server. If it's
the same database, then it is highly probable that it is replicated,
and only for basic information like user ID and item numbers.
But the applications running are quite different. For example, you
cannot select "small cents" and "large cents" with all the correlated
subgroupings on the Swiss site. They have totally different groups
(something like "standard mint", "commemoratives", "precious metals",
and two or three more). I have to exclude a whole bunch of stuff when
I look for U.S. coins on these sites by entering a filter exclusion
statement, something like this:
-(state,quarter,statequarter,statequater,quater,kennedy,eisenhower,sacagawea)
And I still get all the "silver proof" modern issues. Filtering on
"silver" and "proof" would filter out other things that I might want
to see, however. OTOH, they let me filter Russian coins as to
"pre-1917", "USSR", and "Russian Federation". Try doing that on
ebay.com!
