No problem, it's an interesting story, or so I think...

I just happen to be looking at the Mint's web site the day the Delaware bags
went up for sale. I thought "hey those are pretty cool" so I bought 20 of
them, just to give as gifts and put a few back. They were almost free,
initially (29.95 per bag). I gave several away to my coin collecting and
non collecting friends. A few weeks later, I was cruising ebay and saw the
bags selling for nearly $100! I went back to the Mint's web site and saw
that the were no longer available. The mint didn't originally advertise the
limited time offer they started, but best I remember, the first states had,
I think a three day ordering window on the bags.

When Pennsylvania, the second state went up for sale, I bought another 20,
and sure enough, 3 days and no longer available. Same thing on ebay, a few
weeks later and they're selling like hotcakes.

Next up was New Jersey. Again 20 bags, and again only available for 3 days
and again they were on fire on ebay.

By the time Georgia came out, I realized if a fellow had enough bread, he
could make a good profit on these, I tried to free up more cash, but I could
only afford 50 bags of Georgia. Again they did well on ebay.

So I set out to raise the enough cash to REALLY stock up. I ended up buying
a little over 400 Connecticut bags. I thought I was a GENIUS! Well, so did
every dealer in America, I think... To date, I think the Connecticut bags
have the third highest production figures of all the bags. See, what I
really did was personally kill the market. They did initially go up to about
50 bucks each for the first several weeks after the Mint stopped selling
them, but with the flood on the market, it soon dropped to issue price, and
below. So, I threw the ones I didn't sell in the safe (and anywhere else I
could safely stash them) and forgot about them. Well, the market never came
back for them. I'm sure they'll go up by the end of the State Quarter
program, and I still have a good number put back. We'll see.

The rest of the first year bags continue to bring good money. The Delaware
bags hit a high of around $900 per bag, and still trade around $4-500. The
rest first year bags are trading between $100 and $200 each.

I'd like to take a moment and stake my claim on the phrase "numismatic
beanie babies", because that's what these bags are. 10 or 20 years after the
end of the SQ program, I doubt there will be any value left in them. Again,
we'll see, but they are still very cool, I think.

Oh yeah, and for the info on the auction. I got a couple offers, a few
hundred back of my ask, but then I got offered what I was asking. The ebay
final value fees came out to $116.63. Shipping comes out to $123.50
including full insurance, not too bad. I ended up using Jacks earlier
suggestion of the flat rate boxes from USPS. I got them all in 5 boxes,
including another $500.00 brick of quarters the same bidder bought. The
boxes weighed right around 60 pounds each.

All in all, I did okay, better than just opening the bags and cashing them
in at the bank, or trying to sell them onesy-twosey.

Thanks for reading my rambling... and thanks to everyone who posts here for
all the great stuff I get to read. Maybe I'll try to post more now. (I think
I'm hooked on early copper now....) ;)

Best regards,
Brian
