Careful, Ian. You're practicing a Phil-thing, and he's not very good at it.
You need to be careful passing judgement based solely on IP addresses and
ISP's. In fact, these 2 go hand-in-hand.
Any dial-up or reconnected DSL connection pulls from an ISP's pool of IP
address. Dial up in particular; every dial in can net a different IP (to a
point). Once you hang up, the next called gets the IP you just had. So, it
isn't uncommon to find multiple names posting from the same IP address.
Well, let's say it doesn't automatically indicate something funny. Phil
would suggest this, but as we know, Phil is very often wrong. Usually?
Well, let's leave it at "very often".
Examining the same-IP address phemonina further, you will find posts from
entire company divisions posting from what seems to the the same IP address.
To the outside world, it is the IP address of the firewall machine. Inside,
there can he hundreds or even thousands of machines reporting to be this one
IP. I have in my home network, online right now <counting ...>, 7 machine
(I've include 1 Tivo and another PC I call my PC-VO, which does nothing but
work like a Tivo; the other 5 are PC's). All 7 of these machines, when
making requests, hitting web pages AND posting to usenet, will appear with
the same IP address. Ok, so the IP address identifies my home at the
moment. It's a cable hookup currently, and the IP address could change (but
doesn't as often as my previous DSL connection).
Now, when I "guessed" (with extreme accuracy, I might add), that Jorg was
behind the recent Troll-gladite postings, I compared headers based solely in
this group and only recent postings. I had reported that I found a match on
posting host and newsreader (matching X-Newsreader lines are also a great
indicator, specifically if highly versionized). In actuality, there was no
post host recorded, but the abuse line and X-headers matched. It was the
same ISP, using the exact version of a particular newsreader, posting in the
same timeframe, into the same group. Add the subject material to that, and
you just have to shake your head. Well, I did.
I'm just cautioning against basing claims in IP addresses alone. They can
and are easily be reassigned to difference source machines. When this
happens, tho, the ISP will remain constant .., bright.net owns that IP
address in this case, but can assign it to anyone attaching to their
network. So, the fact that the ISP matched in both cases is moot. They
would have too.
What about X-newsreader lines? I seem to recall bright.net being mentioned
before as a source of some cam-o-flauged postings? Anyway, that's my 2.5
centimes.
Whoever it is, or was, or ends up being, he certainly has Phil pegged.
Nick
