What you describe as what you thought should happen is how it should have
happened. They should have deducted from your PayPal balance first and then
gotten the $5.11 from your other payment option.

What you describe happening has happened to me as well. Because I can't go
back to the payment transaction and see exactly what was checked, I can't
say for sure, but I think somehow there was a glitch in the PayPal system.
I don't THINK I had accidently or unwittingly checked for them to take it
out of my bank account, but I can't say for sure because I had just assumed
it would work like it was supposed to. Like you, I had a problem with the
bank because it took my bank account below the minimum balance and they
charged me a fee.

I wish I could tell you how to solve this problem with PayPal. They SHOULD
pay your overdraft fee. But I doubt they will. I WOULD make a stink about
this with them if you can figure out how to contact the right people to do
so.
