Mountain Hiking: Trial Running Shoe or Hiking Boots?

Recently I have started to go to the mountains more often and would
like to buy some better equipment now. Sometimes I run in the mountains
and have been using regular running shoes for it. But on steep rocky
trails the slippy sole feels too dangerous. Other time I just go hiking
on medium or medium-hard trails.
If I want to buy only one pair of shoes which option would be better. I
can't decide between
1) buying trail running shoes and use them for mountain running as well
as regular hiking
2) or buying stiff hiking boots and use regular running shoes for
running.
What do you think? Do you have any recommendations? I have never used
boots for hiking (expect in the winter, for the temperature) and seem
to be fine with regular sport shoes (except that they are too slippy).
What is the advantage of hiking boots compare to trail running shoes?
.
