My son called me from Okinawa this morning to wish me a happy Fathers
Day. During the conversation he asked me some computer questions as
he has been having some problems with his...........specifically that
his internet browsers (IE and Firefox) no longer connect to the
internet. His email works fine. He tried to restore to when the
browsers worked with no luck. Some computer geeks on base tried to
help him fix the problem with no luck.

He runs VISTA. After he told me about some other problems he was
having I suggested that he back up his programs and important stuff
and reformat..........this time to WinXP.

I will be purchasing WinXP tomorrow and ship it to him (my mistake for
purchasing the laptop with VISTA).

So............I was wrong............most of you were right. I am
now in the "VISTA" is crap group. ;-)

If I were making a WAG, I'd say some firewall setting is pooched, and that setting is keeping the browsers from reaching the network. Or...he has picked up a virus. Typically, when there is a problem as you describe, you cannot upload or download email, either.

It's not quite as easy as your post implies to change operating systems on a proprietary computer like a Dell. You may need to obtain a CD of Dell drivers for the reformatted computer.

I wish your kid were local. If you had shipped the computer to me, I could have fixed the problems in a day or so and shipped it back to you.

My college-boy nephew just bought a new, high-end Dell laptop with VISTA. He had it shipped to me for some software installs. Nice box. I tried to talk him into getting a Macbook Pro, but in between schoolwork, he's a PC gamer, and apparently a number of the games he likes are not yet available in "native mode" for Apples. Or something like that...not being into computer games, I don't follow the game stuff at all.

If there is a new computer in your future, you might want to take a look at the Macs...

I am glad to see you have come over to the dark side. That has been what i have been suggesting for over 6 months.

My next computer will be a mac.

The difference between a dog turd and anything you suggest is...nothing.

I've been fiddling around with Macs for years and have been using one, reluctantly, since 2004. One of my clients is a Mac operation in the office, and when I stop by, I frequently have to use a machine there for something or other. When my wife drags me to the mall, I hang out in the Mac store and have done so for many years.

My decision to buy a MacBook had nothing to do with your "suggestion," crapbrains.

Now...why don't you restrict your comments to justifying the further existence here of your idiot son, Loogy?

Well if you had not talked JimH out of asking Dell for a WinXP disk, it would have saved him and his son a lot of trouble. Dell should include a mailing label with their address, so everyone can send you their laptops when they have problems.

Just keep piling it higher and deeper, crapbrains.
