Well, while at work I use gmail, so I suppose that counts me out.

Oh well....

Lots of people use gmail for email. There's nothing wrong with gmail.

Bull. More and more people killfile it to avoid all the spam coming
from it.
And Google groups have just about destroyed the usefulness of finding
archived info in news groups.

There's no reason to filter messages where the return email is a gmail
account.

Not if you don't care about the massive amount of spam that emanates
from there.
Many of the subscribers of misc.consumers.frugal-living have blocked
all posts where the return email contains gmail.com.
JR mentioned picking up only the gmail reply posts, but the gmail
spammers often reply to their own initial spam with the same spam to
circumvent that.
I suspect you just aren't aware of that.

I am. And if you block posts with the Message-ID field containing
googlegroups you'll block those posts as well since they reply to
their own posts also using googlegroups. There are many valid posters
who don't use google groups to post but do have a gmail account.
You're unnecessarily blocking them if you use gmail on the return
email field. If you only block Message-ID's containing googlegroups
you'll block just about 100% of the spam without blocking as many
valid posts.

You don't have to play with any other filters or settings. Just
install NewsProxy and block Message-ID containing googlegroups. I did
that a few weeks ago and haven't see a single spam post since. But I
have seen all of the valid posts from users who have gmail as their
email account.
