A good operator in a union state makes more like $60k
BTW if you really saw a pro run a machine you would probably reconsider
your "pretty good" evaluation of yourself. I have rented them and got
the job done too but the real guy goes a lot faster, the work is better
and they don't tear up the dirt as much. The real skill comes in when
they are doing something more precise that simply moving dirt from here
to there tho. The guys who work with pipe or other things that involve
moving a ton and a half and putting it in a hole with a quarter of an
inch "slop" are not weekend warriors. They can manipulate something huge
with that bucket like guys who build ships in bottles.
Right you are, I've seen some pretty amazing work done with a loader
backhoe, I can't remember the website url, but one has a set of pics
with a guy using a front loader/backhoe combo lifting himself, and the
rig into a boxcar full of coal or something like that.

BTW don't ever take the bet that a guy can't pick up a nickle off the
concrete with a backhoe (bobcat or any other loader)
I've seen my share of excavator operators who are capable of scratching the
bare ass of a baby with the bucket.
Big crane operators are the elite in my opinion.- Hide quoted text -

If it's a big job and near the limits of the machine, an engineer
designs the "pick". Have a colleague who used to work for PG&E and 90%
of his engineering was designing these picks to get equipment into
existing structures.
