We will be purchasing a 46"~48" HGTV shortly, with a Sony Bravia 46"
1080p LCD HDTV high on the list.

The TV will be going into our family room which is presently set to
receive premium HD service from TWC.

How difficult is it to set up and calibrate these TV's? Is it
something
that you need to contract out or is it a DIY project?

TIA!
Calibrate?

We have two HDTVs. No calibration. Five cables (if memory serves) out
of
the cable box into the TV. One expensive as hell video cable out of the
DVD player into the TV. Turn it on. That's all we did.

Thanks. But I have always calibrated the color settings on our TV's
using
the Avia DVD calibration program. Are you saying this is not needed on
the
new HDTV sets?

I've got two SONY hdtvs. No calibration seemed necessary.

Ditto. Both Bravias, both 1080p's, no calibration necessary.

Heh. How do you know, if you didn't do it?
"Calibration" is not simply the selection of the various default modes like
"sports, film, standard, dynamic". It is also not the "custom" setup
whereby you manually set the overall color drive, brightness, sharpness,
etc.

Calibration includes manually setting the individual green, blue and red
drives to adjust the monitor display to a reference standard. In the old, 3
gun CRT displays it also involved doing a gross and then a fine convergence
setup. Calibration will correct for overdriving them (typical of the
"Dynamic" mode) and will contribute to a significantly sharper image as
well. The purpose of the calibration DVDs is to provide the reference test
bars and images to adjust to.
