The precise date of the expiration of b'ak'tun is not known due to the
vagries of time - in that nobody exactly knows what time scale the
Mayans used.

As written, the date is thought to be 12/21/12 which, if you were a
numerologist, should give you some pause for thought. However, the
corrected star chart calendar adjusts the date to 12/23/12 which kind
of ruins the whole "dyre" effect of 12/21/12.

Depending on which expert is discussing this, the year may even be
incorrect - off as much as minus four years and plus 5 years. There
are experts who believe that the "sun" calender was based on a earlier
calendar which used a completely different scale to record time and as
a result, nobody knows anything because it's not calculable.

The show that I saw on the history channel equated 12/21/2012 to an
astronomical event in the milky way. Found this on the net:

What occurs is an alignment between the galactic and solar planes.
Specifically, the winter solstice sun will conjunct the Milky Way, which is
the edge of our spinning spiral galaxy . The place where the sun meets the
Milky Way is where the "dark-rift" in the Milky Way is - a black ridge along
the Milky Way caused by interstellar dust clouds This is a feature of the
Milky Way anyone can see on a clear midsummer's night. At dawn on the winter
solstice of A.D. 2012, the sun will be right in this dark-rift, and the
orientation is such that the Milky Way rims the horizon at all points
around. Thus, the Milky Way "sits" on the earth, touching it at all points
around, opening up the cosmic sky portal. The galactic and solar planes are
thus aligned. "Sky portal" is just a term to describe the "opened sky"
scenario apparent when the Milky Way rims the horizon. This is not to be
confused with the "dark-rift" itself.



This alignment co-insides with Dec 2012. No one agrees just what the Mayan
prediction actually was. Everything from increase in tsunami's and
earthquakes to the end of all mankind.

The end of the last age occured somewhere around 3000 bc with the sinking of
Atlantis.(according to new-agers)

2012 will probably just like all of the Christian predicitons through the
ages that the apocalypse is upon us.
