Re: OT: Vista

Did you try loading those games in "XP Compatibility Mode?" That worked
for me with the one old computer game I like and also with an older
computer program.<<

Back from Disney....

Yes, Compatability Mode was the first thing I tried. I fired off an email to
the ToonTown folks, and the response was, "We currently have no upgrades in
place that will add support for Vista, yada yada, yada."

Oh well, the trip was great, and XP was flawless.

As most of you know, I was a tester for Vista, and basically warned
folks off of it. Well, yesterday, in preparation of our trip to
Disneyland with the kids, I pulled out my 4 year old laptop. It doesn't
get much use lately, and was loaded with a bunch of stuff that was
bogging it down. My goal here was to have a machine that would play DVD
movies, and play my son and daughter's favorite games.

For kicks, I decided to load Vista, since I never had it on this
machine, and I was gonna format the drive anyway. To make a long story
short (too late), I spent HOURS searching for drivers to get my machine
to work. The hardest ones were the audio drivers, and since a movie or
game with no audio would suck, it was pretty important.

Great, finally everything seems to be fine. That was until I tried to
load an online game (Toontown), and everything went to hell in a
handbasket. That's my son and daughter's favorite game right now, and
it'd be perfect for the wind-down period after the park. Try as I might,
it kept producing an "unspecified error."

Oh well, forget that one, let's try another. This one had different
errors, but the result was the same... no workie. Aint this wunnerful!

Bottom line, I formatted the drive again, and XP Pro is re-installing as
we speak. I've been around computers for 25 years, so I know what I'm
doing. I really don't mind all of this, it just takes some time. If I
were your average computer user though, I'd be tearing up the tech
support line!

Vista may work for many, but if it doesn't do what YOU need it to do,
it's a waste. Unfortunately, there's no way to know until you install
it, and there is NO uninstall.

OK I'm done. :-)

Ditto what Harry said. Compatibility mode has worked for all my games and
media apps that were not written for Vista. I've bven having a ball with
Vista Ultimate.
