For those who may be interested:1 - Can you call 911 directly - as in to the local dispatch center? Or
After having a good experience with my Vonage business line and fax line (I have had it for about 2 weeks) I went ahead and ordered the service for our home phone line.
is it routed through a switch in East Bumbust?
I don't want to dial any more number than I have to when I have someone banging in the front door or breaking a window while the power is out, the cell site has failed, and I'm loading my shotgun.
Since most phones have speed dial, you really only have to dial 1 number.
In most cities 911 services operates the same with VOIP as it does with MA Bell, those who live in God's Country don't have that option, yet. When I set up my VOIP my 911 service requested that I call them to verify that they had the correct info. MaBell needs competition to keep them at the best. If it was not for competition, you would still be paying $2.50/min to call LA. Do you remember when your long distance bills were over $500 and you had to YELL into the phone on all long distance calls? VOIP will be good for your service even if you don't use the service.
When I discontinued MA Bell for local service they were as snotty as they could be. I requested they physically disconnect their system at the junction box, from my phone line, so I would not connected to their power supply. This would allow me to use the telephone lines in my home for my VOIP phones. They told me they would not do that, and if I did it, they would prosecute me for tampering with their system. Since I live in a condo, and did not want to tamper with any wires after it left their junction box, Hell will freeze over before I go back to MaBell.
Luckily, my service has been nearly perfect. The only thing I have had to do, which I believe is related to my ISP is occasionally reboot my ISP and telephone modem. Clark Howard, a consumer advocate, has received nothing but POSITIVE feedback on Vonage. While Sunrocket is not quiet as good, it is still highly rated.
So when you trip and fall on something splitting open your head, will
you have to reboot your ISP and modem to call 911?
Heh, heh, heh...
Or even better yet - how about Mrs. Fletcher living with her son and
his wife - they aren't home, Mrs. Fletcher trips, falls and can't get
up. She presses her Lifeline thing and - whoops - gotta reboot the
ISP and modem. Or her oxygen thingy gets tangled up and she's about
to pass out, presses her Lifeline thingy and the node collapses. Or
the speed drops - or some idiot is using an uncapped modem to download
the latest Jenna Jameson porn flick ont he same node?
I'm telling you - you guys with this type of service are playing with
f
The only time I have to reboot is when I download a very very large trialware file. I consistently get 6500 kbps so I have no problems, ever.
When was the last time you called 911 or pressed your Lifeline thingy?
