When I was a kid in upstate NY we only needed 1 or 2.

Lowest I ever saw in NY was -41 when I was in college, mid 1960s. I
had an old '58 Ford Fairlane with a standard transmission, and the
grease was so thick that morning that it tried to take off in neutral.
Lucky it started.
Beleieve that now makes me entitled to warmth in the winter. :-)
Sometimes the snow would thaw some during the day, then freeze hard as
hell in the night, and you couldn't move your car because it was stuck
with ice!
