Besides an AV and a firewall program, what other programs areJim, with Comcast you get a whole suite of McAfee products for
considered
*Must Have*? I ask this as I want my son's new computer to
be
properly
protected and maintained.
My opinion:
1. CleanUp
2. Ad-Aware SE Personal
3. SpyBot
4. Perfect Disk running in the automatic defrag mode.
5. Tune-Up Utilities 2006 with 1-Click Maintenance running
in
the
automatic
test mode.
6. SpywareBlaster
7. SpyDefense
8. StartUp Inspector
9. Everst Home Edition
10. Acronis True Image
11. System Mechanic
I would have included the MS AntiSpyware beta program but
until
they
get
the
new version sorted out I will pass on it.
What are your recommendations?
free
that will take the place of most of the spyware, av, etc.
Why? I think the suite works great!
I don't like it, either. Too much begging, too many reminders.
But,
hell,
I don't answer the phone for UNKNOWN NAME, UNKNOWN NUMBER.
I heard it is also a resource hog, but not as much as Norton is
though.
I'll bet that the McAfee Security Center isn't as much of a resource
hog as using 11 different complete programs to protect yourself!
They don't run in the background. And McAfee cannot do what those 11
programs can.
They don't? How does Ad Aware protect you if it doesn't run in the
background? How does True Image get a snapshot of your hard disk to
ghost if it doesn't run in the background? How does the THREE spyware
programs you need find the spyware when it comes in if it doesn't run
in the background? Now the ONLY ones of those 11 that McAfee Security
Center doesn't do is the tune up and system mechanic stuff. But, then,
McAfee comes with a nice registery fixer that works wonders to speed
your system up.
They don't run in the background. You open them, update them if needed,
run
them and close them.
Why are you being so argumentative about this?
are you really saying that the ONLY time you are protected against
spyware, ad ware, malicious scripts and viruses is when you manually
open a program to check for them? I like knowing that my spyware,
adware and anti-virus software is keeping itself up to date, instead of
me having to remember to check for updates, which in this day and age,
is needed almost daily.
Users of Ad-Aware Personal can efficiently remove behavior-trackingFrom Lavasoft's website:
spyware; thus protecting your privacy on the Internet
Enhances your computer's performance by protecting against bandwidth
stealing programs
How does it do that without running in the background?
Provides greater computer security by removing keyloggers and other
programs, which put passwords, credit card numbers, and other
vulnerable data at risk online
How's it do THAT without running in the background?
The handy online-update feature ensures that Spybot always has the mostFrom PepiMK's website:
current and complete listings of adware, dialers, and other uninvited
system residents.
How's it do THAT without running in the background?
How does Acronis ghost your hard drive if it doesn't run in the
background?
I'm not being argumentive, I'm being informative. Most of your 11
programs must run in the background to do what they are intended to do!
So, YOUR argument about McAfee taking too much resources is bull if you
are going to run all those programs! Right now with McAfee Security
Center running with every feature on, my total CPU usage is 2%, and
that is with everything that I'm doing PLUS McAfee. Would you say that
is a resource hog???
Informative? Do you understand what 'running in the background' means?
I have several programs *running in the background*, none of which are
resource hogs. These include ZoneAlarm, Avast, Iola task agent,
WeatherPulse, Spyware Blaster and Mailwasher Pro.
Perfect Disk opens on schedule nightly, defrags, then closes. All the other
programs have to be manually opened, run and then manually closed.
I am glad you are happy with McAfee. I don't care for it though. Have a
nice day Curtis.
