Besides an AV and a firewall program, what other programs are
considered
*Must Have*? I ask this as I want my son's new computer to be
properly
protected and maintained.

My opinion:

1. CleanUp
2. Ad-Aware SE Personal
3. SpyBot
4. Perfect Disk running in the automatic defrag mode.
5. Tune-Up Utilities 2006 with 1-Click Maintenance running in the
automatic
test mode.
6. SpywareBlaster
7. SpyDefense
8. StartUp Inspector
9. Everst Home Edition
10. Acronis True Image
11. System Mechanic

I would have included the MS AntiSpyware beta program but until
they
get
the
new version sorted out I will pass on it.

What are your recommendations?
Jim, with Comcast you get a whole suite of McAfee products for free
that will take the place of most of the spyware, av, etc.

I am not a fan of McAfee.
Why? I think the suite works great!

I don't like it, either. Too much begging, too many reminders. But,
hell,
I don't answer the phone for UNKNOWN NAME, UNKNOWN NUMBER.
I heard it is also a resource hog, but not as much as Norton is though.
I'll bet that the McAfee Security Center isn't as much of a resource
hog as using 11 different complete programs to protect yourself!

They don't run in the background. And McAfee cannot do what those 11
programs can.

Of the programs on your list, I run Ad-Aware SE Personal and
Spybot about once a week, and I have a competitive program to
Perfect Disk running in the automatic defrag mode, plus I run a combo
firewall and email "checker."

I dumped Symantec's Norton Suite after using it for many years because of
several annoying problems the company's "tech support" was incompetent to
resolve. Cleaning off the remnants of Norton was a special annoyance.

I tried the McAfee stuff for a while, but found it annoying.

A couple of other pretty good programs:
