the side, I don't see a particular downside. When I went down the

we trailed a line, figuring if someone went over, it would be one last
shot at holding on. It slowed the boat slightly I suppose. Didn't put
knots in it though.



How about a line like that that might trip the self-steering, allowing

boat to round up?

I believe there's a system that will kill an engine, probably take it out
of
autohelm also. Probably expensive, so it works out to a cost/benefit
analysis.

Ellen Macarthur (the real one) used such a device.



Didn't see this response until now... did she actually use it or just have
it installed?

Another, somewhat related issue, is how to retrieve an unconscious person...
if they can actively help, then something like a lifesling or thowing line
or even swim ladder would probably work. I still haven't seen any truly
useful method of retrieving an unconscious or even semi- person.
