Do you Google? Do you Wiki? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet

You will see how wrong you are. Usenet predates Internet. Usenet would
work without Internet as Internet is a term inclusive of Usenet. When
one posts a message on a Usenet discussion group it doesn't go all
over the Internet as Geoff claimed.

The All-Knowing Wilbur Hubbard

The shallowness of Internet knowledge is only exceeded by that of your
personality. You rely upon a partial definition from wikipedia whereas I
am the retired CEO of a large ISP (Internet Service Provider). I'm sure
that I've forgotten more about the Internet than you ever knew. I had one
engineer dedicted to running the news server. I am very well versed on how
they function.

You are correct that news groups do not have to be on the Internet. They
can be private. However, the rec.boats.cruising group is a public group on
the Internet. When you post an article to this group via your news server,
that server sends your posting on to other news servers via the Internet.
If all goes well, your article will eventually propagate to all of the
other servers on the Internet.

I'm not quite how you think that news servers/groups work, but whatever
you're thinking, you're wrong.
