Anyone know why, in the several pictures of her listing but not yet
awash, she is going vigorously
astern ?
According to an interview with the Swedish captain , Bengt Wiman, the
Explorer's engines went into reverse (due to a malfunction) shortly before
the ship was abandoned... he also claims that the watertight doors were
all closed whenever they were transiting ice...
My wife and I took several cruises when the Explorer was the "Lindblad
Explorer" and the lowest level of the cabins (C Deck?) were located at the
waterline...so water could of course have entered from a hole into a cabin
and from there made it's way up the the stairs to the upper part of the
ship...
Nice ship - sad ending for the "Little Red Ship" as she was know...
apologies for the translation:
"He (the Captain) and the engine crew of 15 stayed onboard and the
technicians were able to start the engine again, which made it possible to
launch 8 large rubber rafts in addition to the 4 life boats.
But due to the ship's technical construction the engine all of a sudden went
into reverse, She (the ship) startet to go into full reverse circling at 9
knots. That when I decided to leave the ship - as the last man, said Wikman"
