Re: Fuel pump and filter mystery

A short story here: Some years ago I had the occasion to rebuild my
venerable Perkins 4-107. As long as I had the engine apart I took the
injectors and pump to a pump shop to have it calibrated and the
injectors checked. When I came to get them the bill was $100 which was
a substantial amount of money in Singapore at that time. I asked the
guy "Wazzat?" and he handed me the pump plungers and pointed out the
wear. "Change the filters", the guy says. "But I got good filters",
says I. "Change the filters!"

It seems to me, (bearing in mind that I have *lots* of filter surface area
for my fuel flow) that partially loaded filters would be less likely to pass
particles through to the injectors unless the openings get physically
larger. I do see now though that the large surface area of my primary would
let more stuff through to the secondary. I know my filters are
theoretically too large but it's hard to get a good match for a flow of just
1 GPH.

I now don't think this had anything to do with the filters which both had no
visible surface contamination. The primary had changed color a bit but I
could still see all the fibers. I think it was the bleeding and exercising
of the fuel pump that fixed things after I changed the secondary. My prime
suspect is still the pressure switch in the electric pump so that unit will
be coming out soon.
