Why is it alright for you to rattle on ad-infinitum about how
great
Skype is? In the past 14 months, you've have 69 posts
regarding this
commercial service. You're a great spokesman for them. I
realize that
you probably don't have any financial relationship with them,
but the
bottom line is that you're pushing a commercial service. (Note
that
I've been a user since early on, but I don't feel the need to
push the
service.)

Yes, because I have no pecuinary interest in Skype or any of its
other addons like MobiVox and am only pointing out its great
usefulness to others who may want information on its service.

I don't make a dime.

I also post about batteries, VHF propagation, HF propagation,
boat DC electrics, various electronic gadgets I think the group
may find useful or amusing, etc., NONE of which has anything to
do with my Organ/Keyboard repair business.

What I find amusing is you COUNT each post and keep accurate
records, like some government accountant bureaucrat reminding me
how many times I have posted about anything. Is this a hobby or
some kind of sick obsession of yours?

Paragraph 2 - What would happen to this, or any, rec newsgroup if
every time some new commercial service or webpage about boat
created a thread about it, posted by the owner or a
representative of the company? How many new boats, boat
products, engines, engine products, electronics and accessories
come online every day? If we're advertising NavQuest's website,
all these other few thousand commercial webpages should be ok,
too, right? Shall we fill up r.b.c and r.b and r.b.e with all
the commercial webpage "announcements", rendering looking through
this subject list for articles about sail battens useless or
impossible?

Paragraph 3 - You're bombarded by ads on WEBPAGES. So far, up
until now, you have NOT been bombarded by ads on r.b.c, r.b or
r.b.e newsgroups. Let's keep it that way, our own little spam-
free island of texting. Are you against that or shall we start
posting the binary ads they'd just LOVE to put on here?

Paragraph 4 - Opening the door to the spam locker just a crack to
let "announcements" leak out will make r.b.c just another place
to post spam in no time at all....

Larry

Larry,

The fact of the matter is that you had an inordinate number of posts
preaching the benefits of a commercial service called Skype. I don't
keep track of your post count, but I was sensitive to the unusual
posting rate. Using another free service called groups.google.com, I
simply filled in "skype, larry and rec.boats.cruising" and got your
posting count. Note that I was able to ignore the advertising
associated with the google search and I wasn't forced to click on any of
it. I don't consider it spam nor do I find it objectionable.

Another observation is that you seem to have appointed yourself as the
police chief/mayor of r.b.* and run around screaming at anyone who
includes any commercial content alongside of free boating related
content.

This reminds me of how you ranted and raved about how ActiveCaptain.com
"reeked of spammers" and how if anyone signed up to utilize their
service, that they would inundated with spam. I signed up and that
never happened and I personally think that they offer a good, free
service.

And lets not forget about the AISliverpool.com service that you chatted
up. When you open detail pages within that, there are google ads at the
bottom. While I don't consider this to be a commercial site, one could
certainly argue that point.

My issue is that you have a double standard. You deem some web sites
acceptable and others unacceptable based upon content that you're
interested in. If you're not interested, your run off at the mouth and
brand them as havens of spammers.

I certainly don't want to see this this group turn into a haven for
companies posting pure spam with no attempt at providing unique, free
cruising related content. I think that NavQuest is trying to do that,
and that some slack should be given. The first attempt at this content
has a lot to be desired, but one can hope that it will evolve into
something better and highly useful.

I personally like finding out about new web sites that offer new
services and information to the cruising community. Then again, I
actually cruise and don't spend my life tied up to a dock and posting
non-stop to this news group. So perhaps my interests are different from
yours.
