GPS/plotter should things go wrong?

I, personally, like this idea much better. Redundant systems on navigation near assure 100% reliability of the total package. Being offshore is like a NASA probe headed for Mars...the only way to fix it is turn on the second system...or leave both of them running and CROSS CHECKING the fix.

I'm not sure you need two $2000 plotters aboard. AS you're not hobbled with steering and watching at the nav station, with more time to switch displays, wouldn't a cheaper display work as good? Does the Nav really need color? Already having Seatalk configured and running, you're probably stuck with Raymarine's proprietary nonsense. What comes over the NMEA output can't do what Raymarine's doing on Seatalk instruments if you want them fully integrated. We had B&G Network instruments already aboard my buddy's Amel Sharki when he purchased it. So, we stuck with B&G for the autopilot and other sailing instruments. But, the radar-
chart plotter is a Raymarine RL70CRC sitting next to the old Garmin 185 plotter/sonar off his old boat. I got them all working together, mostly, but, for instance, only one shows radar data and some of the statements one manufacturer is looking for on the NMEA network just isn't right coming out of some other manufacturer's NMEA output. The GPS receivers are a Raystar 120 Primary and Garmin 185 backup. Backup compasses are a Raymarine Smart Heading Sensor and a B&G compass sensor, part of the B&G Network Pilot autopilot. The little B&G sensor is FAR better than the much more expensive Raymarine SHS if the sea is rough...more stable.

It's a hard choice to make. My favorite chart plotter at the nav station is the B&G/Simrad Yeoman paper chart plotter guts I salvaged out of Geoffrey's portable Yeoman that came unglued in his truck in the sun. I mounted the boards to the bottom of the chart table top with double-sided industrial tape. The Yeoman puck reads the signal through the entire Maptech chart book and table top to the chart we want on top with 1/2" more to spare. With the Yeoman, if it all exploded at once, we know we are right HERE (pointing to last pencil dot we made in the velum overlay at 1300 local.) I can see the WHOLE chart, not just a screen width of it, in full detail with the Yeoman. Its 4 arrows point me to where we are now, when they go out. Or, I can simply move it to a point I'm thinking about navigating to on the chart and the LCD display tells me course and distance, continuously, to that point. Click the point and it sends the waypoint data to the other chart plotters over NMEA as the B&G Pilot swings her, if it's watching the network....(c;

Larry,

I too use a Yeoman plotter w/Maptechs at the nav station. I've not connected it with anything.

I have an old Garmin 75 GPS, Raytheon radar and Autohelm autopilot.

Can I connect all this stuff together and if yes, how do you recommend ?

Appreciatively,

Courtney
