Lanny, after seeing the FAQ on your site about not having plans to map the southward migration, I think I have a strategy that would negate any worries about the possibility that people would report multiple last sightings. I'd also be happy to host and run the map if you could provide some consultation regarding the map display software.

Eric, you are more than welcome to give it a shot (all hope abandon, ye who enter here).

Given the dot-with-date format of my maps, no mapping software I know of can decide which reports to discard to avoid unreadable crowding while preserving the sense of migration progress. That part requires human judgment.

I think I've a workable aid for selecting which points to plot of a dataset containing "good" points. I've been experimenting with visualization in a completely different area of interest.

So does weeding out the prank reports, suspected winter hummers, and non-Ruby-throated.

Can I assume that is a point just too far in time/space from other reports?

reports than useful ones. By the end of the season, about 10% of all reports received will end up on the map.

Is the 10% a measure of quality of data? or quantity that can be usefully plotted?

Production process: with each report, I look up the zipcode in Google Maps,

That *CAN* be automated. I've come across a couple of resources for doing that. I'll see if one published by USDA (ie FREE) is practical - if it set up the way I think - it would be totally off line operation.

zoom out to show the whole state, then use my Calibrated Eyeball(tm) to draw a dot on the map in an image editor, and finally add the date. I use Adobe Fireworks , but any image editor would work as well.

The only part that's automated is forwarding the data to Journey North, using a simple filter in my email app.

If you're still game, I'll be happy to send you the empty base map, with or without the breeding range, in any common image format (PNG, GIF, JPEG, TIFF, PICT, BMP, EPS, PDF). Since it's a vector file, I'll even scale it to your dimensional preference.

Do you have copies of
1. RAW data (without email) from past year(s)?
2. data points which passed you "valid report" test - not just the
points that were judged far enough apart to be plotted?

I'd like to take a stab at automating the task. I'm recently retired and need to keep brain functioning.

My email is valid.
