You are right on the Mark Randy, there have been Carolina Wrens in the Fargo area over the winter so they can survive fairly harsh conditions if food is available. There is a family in the area that feed meal worms all winter--the Wrens would be watching for the food to come out and then gobble it up. :)

Wow - I wouldn't have guessed they range up to Fargo! A really
harsh winter, though, will decimate their numbers in their northern
ranges. We have demonstrated that here with data from northern
Indiana. The winter of 1976-77 was especially brutal, and sightings
of Carolina Wrens dropped to essentially zero. Over the next 10
years the number of sightings gradually increased to their former level.

I was really surprised about that too. That is when I asked how the heck they were surviving. I figured that the meal worms would freed solid in nothing flat and that is when she said that the birds were watching and would eat them as soon as they were put out. I believe these folks live near a river thus there are probably some good spots for the birds to get out of the weather.
