I lived in or near Glendale until the late 1960's, then in the SF Bay Area until 1989, just west of Omaha, Nebraska since.

I dint make my point well--I love (in varying degrees, for sure) all God's critters.

I call most of the Sparrows and Finches Little Brown Birds not out of respect, but out of my inability to tell for sure which is which.

I'm pretty comfortable with identifying Gold Finches in the summer time, but Gold Finch/Pine Siskin is prettgy much beyond me in the winter.

Purple Finch/House Finch is beyond me completely (Go ahead and recommend a field guide, I probably have it).

I can do Chipping Sparrow pretty reliably.

And speaking of regions....did you know that birds have regional accents? I didn't, or didn't pay attention, if I did, until a few years ago.

I was visiting in Arkansas a few years ago and heard a bird that sounded sort of familiar, but I couldn't quite figure it out (I can ID some birds that I have never seen--we have had catbirds here as long as we have lived here--longer probably, of course--I saw my first one earlier this summer and didn't know what it was--the reason I started reading this froup, actually).

Any way--the Fayettevile bird turned out to be a Cardinal!

(Since I realized that, I have remembered thinking that our Grackles sound different from the ones around Houston. But I'm not certain that ours are the same kind (as I'm not certain what kind we have).
