Much more likely the nest was raided by a predator. Snake being a likely
suspect sine the nest is on the ground and no shell was found. They
swallow the eggs whole. Doesn't mean I'm right, but I've had snakes
empty my blue box before.

I don't think it was a snake because whatever happened it happened at
night and snakes normally don't hunt at night, do they (being cold-
blooded animals that like heat)? I live in southern New Jersey and
the evenings are still rather chilly. But it could have been a
racoon, skunk, etc. In anycase, sounds like you're saying the chicks
don't eat the reminate of the shell.
