I would take a wild guess that more birds are killed by raptors and tall
buildings than by striking windows in houses. I remember back a few years
ago there was some ridiculous report that cats killed more than 3,000,000
wild birds in Minnesota in a one year period. Off topic, but I was in West
Virginia last week. Opening day for hunting Deer killed: 10, hunters
accidentally shot: 11 But they I saw plenty of road kill along the
Interstate because hunters were flushing they out of the woods. ( I have
nothing against hunting)...

Have people seen this blog post by David Sibley on ways of keeping
birds from hitting windows? The promising possibility he's found is
marking a grid on the window with fluorescent yellow highlighter.

More research is needed, though.
And maybe I should add that he says the best solution, for those who
want to spend the money, is something called the Bird Screen.
