First, I have both a Nikon spotting scope (a Fieldscope III), and Nikon
binoculars (Premier XL 8x42), so I'm a fan of Nikon optics, and I think
it's hard to go far wrong with their products.

That being said, I share Jerry's concern about the zoom eyepiece. I
just don't think any but the most expensive zooms are worth having.
I bird almost all the time with a 24x fixed wide-angle eyepiece on my
Fieldscope, and I love it. I get 171 feet at 1000 yards - very wide by
spotting scope standards.

If you buy this - or any scope for that matter, make sure you can return
it FOR ANY REASON for a period of time, like 30 days. The most
cut-rate dealers won't do this - they will only accept returns for defects.
Then if you get a scope that you end up not liking, you're stuck with it.
One dealer that will accept returns for any reason within 30 days is Eagle
Optics.

Thank you all. I'll check into Eagle Optics.

It sounds like zoom binos... a bad idea. Then, higher power binos
(12-16x) with tripod may be the way to go, right?

Anyone you know about?

Image stabilized binoculars can be hand held in the magnification range
that interests you. My Canon 10x30 IS is even reasonable in a moving
car. There are several models, up to 18x50. They are heavy, but you may
like them.

The ones I like cost $999... Kind of expensive, no?

But I may just give a shot to scopes, Eagle Optics having a return
policy.

Look at this (ultra close focus, brand name, and lower magnification --
less margin for distorsion)...
