through the longish grass ahead of the lawn mower. I managed to hold up
before I ran it over and that's when I saw that it was a bird (dark grey
sparrow) and not a toad as I originally thought. I stopped and watched it
for a while, thinking that it must be injured in some way, but it seemed
fine. It continued to hop through the long grass as I cut the rest of the
lawn. I had to stop several times to avoid running it over, but it had no
fear of the lawn mower, in fact it tried to stay as close to the mower as
possible. I tried to feed it some seed, but it did not want any part of me.
:-) It finally flew off when I finished cutting the rest of the grass.
I don't think it was injured or trying to lead me away from a nest, more
likely eating some kind of bug that the lawn mower was stirring up? I saw it
back on the lawn when I returned with the leaf blower. Any thoughts?
Speaking of birds taking advantage of other animals etc to find food,
Lanny, I have been thinking about that little snake on my hummingbird
feeder. He was either very smart or very dumb! Pretty smart to
figure out that the feeder was attracting hummers but pretty dumb
because if he stayed in the camelia bush where they perch guarding the
feeders he would have had a better shot at catching one. He was
curled a couple of times aroudn the part with the feeding holes and I
don't think a humming bird would have been stupid enough to land on
him. ?? the other day I was sitting a few feet from the feeders
watching the hummers when my cat walked across the grass to sit by me.
One of the humming birds flew down and hung no more than 2 feet from
the cat's face, looked her over good and then flew back to the feeder.
No reaction from the cat.
