Nope, that's what I'd do. The alternative is removing the fan or
enclosing the porch. Once they find a better place to nest, they'll
leave your fan alone.

I had thought of wrapping a plastic snake around the fan housing, but then
again with the vibrations it may fall off and mess up the blades, or plan B
would be an inflatable owl, with the caveat that it may scare the rest of
the birds away. Anyway, thanks for the advice. By the way, they are purple
martins. They are a marvel to watch fly.
