|Yes, I'd agree with Jerry ("3putt") that this is an Indigo Bunting.
|The face is slightly darker than the rest of the bird, and the
|darkness on the wings starts high up on the wing near the
|body. The bill on a Mountain Bluebird also should be jet
|black.

|Hmmm, I'm not coming up with a good guess on that one.
|Do you live near the coast? What kind of habitat do you

|wing bars)? Try to get a pic of this guy if you can, too.

Thanks Randy, I had intended to present you gents and ladies with pictures of
the purple critter and the paler blue critter and see what you thought. We are
90 miles from the coast and 15 miles from a major river. No lakes. Seek 36-14N
77-06W on Google earth to find us. Maidenhead grid FM16kf.
The habitat is very bird-friendly, backyard with good roosting in the row of
mature Leyland Cypress trees, lots of brush at the back of the lot under a 50
yard strip of tall trees backed up by fields of soybeans or cotton or corn.
Small town, population ~750, in the middle of farming country. To digress a bit,
there was a reported encounter with Bigfoot about 18 miles south of here back in
'84 - we're that far out in the boonies. We run two feeders year-round and there
is clean water in the birdbaths most of the time - but there is a tiny creek at
the back edge of our lot. I've been aware of birds for 65 years and can identify
many by wingstroke, song, and so forth but I'm not a very intense birder.
Best regards
John
