You could try a different newsgroup server...
I personally use Usenet (www.usenet.com), though Easynews, newsnet, etc.
(search for "newsgroup provider" to learn more about it than you'll ever
want to know!)
Most of these charge a monthly fee for their use - and it can vary from -
say - $10 to $30, depending on how much "downloading" you do. If you mostly
READ messages and do fairly little downloading (of pix and stuff), than the
lower priced plans should suit you to a "T".
Most news-server services also provide - free of charge - your choice of
nice newsreader software. What this does is allow you to manage your
subscriptions... if (for example) you want to watch what's going on, at four
or five different birding groups, you can set them up as "interest groups",
and have your newsreader get online automagically late at night (when the
kiddies who clog your bandwidth are finished playing DOOM), and grab any new
messages, replies, pix, etc. for you - all ready for you to enjoy over your
morning cup of coffee!
I do a bit more downloading - searching for rare songs, or impossible to
find old movies, etc and when I do find them, they can get big, so I pay a
bit more for the sevices I use - I need larger download limits for the
research I do.
(Right now - I'm on a "quest" searching for bird pictures, documentaries,
etc. to put on CD to take with us when we go visit our son in Russia. Maybe
I can get HIM on this group? He could tell you a lot about what's happening
- bird wise - in and around Moscow.)
The advantage of an independant news-server service is that it doesn't
depend on your local broadband provider - and even if you change providers,
the news-service people are still there. AND, most importantly - if the
folks at Verizon, RCN, Comcast, or whomever want to be totally anal about
only carrying "official" newsgroups (which IMHO is a total CROCK!) - it
doesn't matter, because you bypass them.
Go give it a look-see, and maybe you'll find something useful
One last thing - whatever you do, please, PLEASE, on my bended knee, I beg
of you to make sure your anti-virus and firewall is up to date!
(Downloading messages from - was it this group, or another birding group -
someone slipped in a Trojan virus. My AV bagged it right away!
If you're looking for something good on the real cheap - as in free - try
www.comodo.com - they have a whole suite of protection products that they
give away to home users for free. (they sell certificates and stuff to
online sellers - so they want the "customers" of these guys to be happy.)
Good Luck!
Jim
