Jerry, are you sure those squirrels weren't covered with soot, and then took baths? I don't recall ever seeing a black squirrel there in the Bronx or in Yonkers.

They were gray in Jerome Park (a block away) and Van Cortlandt Park (a block in the other direction). Along Orloff Avenue and Cannon Place they were black. Black must be recessive, because when I relocated one from Van Cortlandt Park to Orloff Ave, the trait washed out.
