Re: Cardinals Fighting to the Death

I'm still disturbed by the incident. Territorial squabbles between
male passerines are common in the Spring. But I've never seen them
end so tragically. Usually, one of the birds cries "uncle" and flies
off in retreat. Apparently, there are murderers among even the small,
innocent looking songbirds we strive to protect.

I for one am having second thoughts about keeping a bird feeder in my
backyard. An endless supply of sunflower seeds may be too much of a
narcotic, leading some birds into unnaturally brutal aggression. It's
one thing when they die after smashing into our windows, or colliding
with our power lines, or when they suffer habitat loss. But when they
start killing THEMSELVES, the birds start to puzzle me.

Murder is something humans do. You're attributing human characteristic to birds. Those birds were simply trying to establish a territory and it ended badly for one of them. It happens more often than you might expect. We just don't usually see it. In fact it's pretty common in white tail deer. The bucks lock antlers and die. What's that a murder-suicide :-)
